Sales Management

You cannot coach a number you cannot see

August 9, 20266 min read

Ask most sales managers when they see their numbers and the answer is “the next morning.” The DMS report lands, the desk reconciles it, and by then the deal you might have saved is gone and the rep you might have redirected has already had the day you did not see. Coaching off yesterday numbers is coaching a game that is already over. The fix is not more reports — it is seeing the game while it is still being played.

A coachable moment has a shelf life

The value of a coaching conversation decays fast. Catch a rep dropping to payments too early on Tuesday and you can fix it Wednesday. Find out at month-end and all you can do is describe what already happened. You cannot redirect a slow start you did not know about, and you cannot save a deal you learned about a day too late. Late numbers do not just inform late — they cost the outcomes you could have changed.

Why the usual tools are always behind

Most stores coach from data that is structurally out of date:

  • The DMS report — accurate, but a day late; it tells you what happened, never what is happening.
  • The spreadsheet — only as current as the last person who updated it, usually stale by noon.
  • The gut feeling — everyone remembers the floor differently, and nobody is quite right.
  • The Monday meeting — reacting to last week while this week is already getting away.

Coaching changes when the numbers are live

Give a manager the store real numbers as they happen and coaching stops being a post-mortem. You see the rep who is behind pace on the 8th, not the 30th. You catch the gross slipping while there are still deals to write. The conversation shifts from “here is what you did last month” to “here is what is happening right now, let us adjust” — and that is the only version of coaching that actually changes a result.

See the day as it takes shape

Real-time visibility is the whole game. A dealership performance dashboard turns the deals you already log into a live view of pace, gross, and pace-to-goal for every rep and team — so a manager sees the day taking shape while there is still time to shape it. It complements your DMS, which keeps doing what it does best; the dashboard adds the live layer coaching depends on.

Coach the moment, not the memory

The best coaches on a sales floor are not the ones with the most detailed month-end reports. They are the ones standing on the floor with the current number in front of them, having the small conversation at the moment it matters. You cannot coach what you cannot see — so the real question is whether you are coaching what is happening, or just what already happened.

The DAS Board turns the deals you already write into live, role-based dashboards — alongside your DMS, not instead of it.
